NerdWallet is one of the most-cited credit-card publishers across AI search engines. When a shopper asks Perplexity or ChatGPT "which travel card should I get," NerdWallet's recommendations flow into the answer. Across 34 of NerdWallet's best-of and hub pages, four premier travel cards dominate: Chase Sapphire Preferred, American Express Gold, Capital One Venture X, and Citi Strata Premier. Sapphire wins the volume game — but the more interesting metric is the conversion index (apply share ÷ mention share × 100). Strata Premier over-indexes at 124, Sapphire at 113, Venture X at 88, and Amex Gold at just 85 — meaning Amex is spending editorial share of voice without a matching CTA share. Read left to right, then use the interactive funnel below to rebase the index against any subset of cards.

TL;DR
124 conversion index for Strata Premier — the shelf's most efficient card at converting mentions into apply-links
85 conversion index for Amex Gold — 28.8% of mentions but only 24.5% of apply-links; biggest under-indexer
72.7% head-to-head first-position win rate for Sapphire Preferred — volume plus placement, indexes at 113

Three of four cards route the click straight from NerdWallet's interstitial to the issuer's own landing page with NerdWallet's affiliate ID in the querystring. Only Capital One inserts an intermediary — goto.capitalone.com, part of the Impact affiliate network (publisher_id 170911). This adds one more hop, one more entity that touches the click, and one more place attribution can break.

6What the shelf rewards
Operating pattern
  • Sapphire wins the volume game. Most mentions (102), most apply-links (87), highest H2H win rate (72.7%), best average position — and a conversion index of 113, above fair share.
  • Strata Premier converts best per mention. Only 32 mentions and 25% H2H, but 30 apply-links — a conversion index of 124, the highest on the shelf. Small footprint, efficient shelf.
  • Amex Gold is the biggest under-indexer. 82 mentions but 53 apply-links and 42.3% H2H — conversion index 85. Editorial share of voice is not translating to CTA share.
  • Venture X mirrors Amex on efficiency (index 88) and is the structural outlier on routing — Impact affiliate network (goto.capitalone.com) instead of a direct-to-issuer link.

The full picture

Four cards, four dimensions — two different winners

Sapphire wins share of mentions, apply-links, and head-to-head placement. Strata Premier wins the conversion index. Amex Gold under-indexes on the same metric. Every card has a different story.

NerdWallet travel card comparison across 4 metrics — share of mentions, share of apply-links, head-to-head win rate, and redirect network type
Volume and conversion aren't the same story
Sapphire has 3.2× the mentions of Strata Premier and 2.9× the apply-links — but Strata converts a higher share of mentions to CTAs. Strata indexes at 124 (13.9% of apply-links vs 11.2% of mentions), Sapphire at 113. Editorial and monetization are aligned in Sapphire's favor by scale, not by rate.
Amex Gold is the biggest leaker on the shelf
Amex Gold gets 28.8% of mentions — second-highest on the shelf — but only 24.5% of apply-links and wins 42.3% of head-to-heads. Conversion index: 85. Editorial share of voice is being spent without a matching CTA yield. For an Amex media buyer, that gap is the metric to fix.
Head-to-head is where the shelf gets stacked
When Sapphire Preferred appears next to another card, it wins the first slot 72.7% of the time. Strata wins 25%. Position is what the shopper sees first and what AI engines extract when they truncate to top-3. Volume plus placement is why Sapphire still indexes above 100 despite Strata's per-mention edge.
Venture X's Impact routing is the structural outlier
Chase, Amex, and Citi all sign direct affiliate deals with NerdWallet. Capital One routes through Impact (impact.com) — the same affiliate network that powers thousands of publishers. Venture X indexes at 88, right next to Amex, so this isn't only a routing story — but it is one more entity in the click path and one more attribution surface.
Sample-size caveat: The Firecrawl API returned 44 pages in the first paginated response of a 200-page crawl. Reviews of specific competitor cards (10 pages) are excluded from analysis to avoid mention bias, leaving 34 best-of and hub pages. A full 200-page census would 4× the mention volume; the ranked order is unlikely to change but exact percentages will move.
What this audit shows

Share of voice is one story. Conversion efficiency is another.

124
Strata Premier conversion index — the shelf's most efficient
Strata has only 32 mentions (11.2% of the shelf) but 30 apply-links (13.9% of CTAs) — the highest apply-per-mention ratio of the four. That's the card an ecomm team would flag as "undervalued by editorial, over-performing at the CTA." Toggle other cards off in the funnel above and Strata's index climbs further.
85
Amex Gold conversion index — the shelf's biggest leaker
Amex Gold captures 28.8% of mentions but only 24.5% of apply-links, and wins just 42.3% of head-to-heads. Editorial share of voice is being spent without a matching CTA yield. If you're on the Amex team, that's the delta to close — the mentions are already there; the apply-link placement isn't following through.
113
Sapphire Preferred conversion index — volume plus placement
Sapphire indexes above 100, but only just. Its dominance is scale-driven — 3.2× the mentions of Strata and 72.7% first-position wins — not conversion-rate driven. When AI engines extract the top 3 recommendations, Sapphire is almost always in them; that's the volume moat. The efficiency crown belongs to Strata.
